A marketing manager came in last spring with a brand guide in a binder, which already told me she took this seriously. Two numbers highlighted in yellow. A stack of heather grey hoodies she'd already bought. And a very reasonable question: "Can you match this exactly?"

Short answer, yes. Longer answer, and the part that mattered more to her: the color she was pointing at in the binder was never going to look like that on a heather grey hoodie, and that had nothing to do with our press. Here's what's actually going on when a brand color meets a shirt.

What is Pantone color matching in screen printing?

It means we mix your ink to a formula instead of grabbing the closest bucket on the shelf. Every PMS number has a published recipe built from a set of base pigments, in specific ratios, by weight. Scale that recipe, mix it, and a shop in Warrenville lands in the same place as a shop in Portland. That's the entire point of the system: a number travels better than the phrase "our blue."

Then comes the part that separates a real match from a hopeful one. We pull a test print on your garment, in your ink, and hold it against the swatch. Not a similar shirt. Not a white sheet of paper. Ink behaves differently on a 100% cotton tee than it does on a poly blend, and a match that only exists on paper isn't a match.

Worth knowing: this is a screen printing thing. Screen printing lays down one mixed, opaque spot color at a time, which is why it can hit a number. Our Premium Film Print (DTF) process builds every color out of CMYK process inks, so it gets impressively close to a PMS target but is blending its way there rather than mixing your actual color. Embroidery matches to the nearest thread on the rack. If an exact match is the priority, screen printing is the process you want.

Why does my brand color look different on the shirt?

Because three separate things shift it, and they stack. Understanding them is most of the battle.

That last row is the one that surprises people. Print PMS 186 red straight onto a black tee and you get a muddy brick. Print white first, then the red on top, and you get the red you asked for. The underbase is the difference, and it's why a color-matched print on darks costs a bit more than the same print on white.

Heather grey, back to our binder friend, is its own puzzle. The fabric is a blend of two fiber colors, so the surface is visually noisy before we put anything on it, and blends can push dye up into the ink under heat. We talked it through and she picked the second color in her guide, the darker one, which sat beautifully on heather and needed no underbase at all. Cheaper and better looking. Those aren't always the same decision, but it's a good day when they are.

Do I actually need an exact match?

Honestly, a lot of the time, no. This is where we'd rather talk you out of spending money than take it. Here's the split we use:

Does Pantone matching cost extra or slow down my order?
