No Mystery Math

What Custom Printing Costs Here. And Why.

Five things set your price: quantity, ink colors, print locations, the garment, and the method. Quantity is the big one. Every job is quoted custom by a real person, free, with no obligation, and we'll tell you straight if there's a cheaper way to run it. Facts last verified July 2, 2026.

The Five Levers

What Moves the Number.

Nothing mysterious drives an apparel quote. These five levers do, in this order.

1 · Quantity
The biggest lever. Setup spreads across every piece, so per-shirt cost drops fast as the count climbs. 100+ pieces per design gets free screens.
2 · Ink Colors
Each color needs its own screen and its own pass on the press. One or two colors keeps setup lean. Dark shirts often add a white underbase.
3 · Print Locations
Front only costs less than front, back, and sleeve. Each location is its own setup and run. Most jobs need one strong location.
4 · The Garment
A basic tee, a premium ringspun, a hoodie, and a performance polo are different blank costs before ink ever hits them. Browse blanks.
5 · The Method
Screen printing wins on runs of about 24 and up. DTF wins small and full-color runs with zero screen fees. Embroidery prices by stitch count.
The Shortcut
Send the job through the quote builder. A real person prices your actual art on your actual garment and sends it back fast.
Setup Fees, Straight

The Fee Everyone Hides. Explained.

Setup means burning a screen for each color in your design. It's real work, and it's the fee online portals bury in fine print. Here's our whole policy, in the open:

01

100+ Pieces: Free

Order 100 or more pieces of one design and screens cost you nothing. The setup line on your quote reads zero.

02

Reorders: Always Free

Rerunning a design we've printed before? Screens are free every time. Uniform programs and yearly events stay cheap to restock.

03

Small Runs: No Screens

Under about 24 pieces, we usually run DTF instead. Full color, no screens to burn, no setup fees at all.

The Honest Part

We're Not the Cheapest. Here's What You're Buying.

Somebody online will always quote lower. Then the art comes out muddy, the ink cracks in the wash, and the deadline slides. Every Sound & Fury quote includes the stuff the bargain price quietly leaves out:

  • A digital proof before anything prints. You approve it or nothing runs.
  • Art help from our in-house designers, included, not an upsell.
  • Printed on our own presses in Warrenville, never brokered out.
  • Inks dialed in and cured to outlast the garment.
  • A human at 630.791.8099. If it's wrong, we make it right.

Stretch the Budget

How to Get More Shirts for Your Money.

  • Order more pieces. The jump from a tiny run to a moderate one drops the per-shirt price fastest.
  • Simplify to one or two ink colors. Fewer screens, fewer passes, lower price.
  • Stick to one or two print locations. Skip the sleeve hit you don't need.
  • Choose a standard garment unless the project truly calls for premium.
  • Reorder the same design. Screens are always free the second time.

Good Questions

Pricing, Answered.

How much does it cost to screen print a shirt?
It depends on five things: quantity, number of ink colors, number of print locations, the garment, and the print method. Quantity matters most, because setup spreads across every piece, so the per-shirt price drops fast as the count climbs. Every job here is quoted custom by a real person, free and with no obligation.
What are screen printing setup fees?
Setup means burning a screen for each ink color in your design; that is the one-time cost portals hide in fine print. At Sound & Fury, screens are free on orders of 100 or more pieces per design and always free on reorders. Small full-color runs can skip screens entirely with our DTF process, which has no setup fees.
How can I lower my screen printing costs?
Order more pieces, use fewer ink colors, keep the design to one or two print locations, choose a standard garment, and reorder the same design, since reorder screens are always free. For runs under about 24 pieces, DTF usually beats screen printing on price because there are no screen fees.
Why are custom shirts cheaper in bulk?
Screen printing has one-time setup work per design. Spread that across 12 shirts and it stings; spread it across 100 and it almost disappears, and at 100 or more pieces we waive the screen fees entirely. That is why the per-shirt price keeps dropping as quantity climbs.
Are you the cheapest print shop near me?
Probably not, and that's on purpose. Your money buys a proof before anything prints, art help from our in-house designers, printing on our own presses in Warrenville, inks cured to outlast the garment, and a human who answers the phone. One botched bargain order costs more than doing it right once.
